Make sure your company is aware of health and safety requirements

December 11, 2009 by admin · 1 Comment

As an employer and owner of a business it is your responsibility to provide a safe working environment for your workers, failure to do so can lead to accidents and injuries in the workplace that could have been avoided. These accidents in the workplace can leave the company open to prosecutions and compensation claims being made which will only hurt your business.

There are a wide range of different measures that you may or may not require, it depends because the requirements for an industrial or factory based business will be different from the requirements for an office based business. As standard most businesses will need the obligatory first aid kit but the size and type of first aid materials to be included can vary, environments with dangerous chemicals for instance will require extra such as eye wash stations and burn related treatments.

A trained first aider should be a vital part of your staff and can be any member of staff in your business. As well as a trained first aider you should have fire marshals also. A trained fire marshal will need to be trained to know what the arrangements for evacuation are as well as how to properly use fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment such as fire blankets and escape ladders.

It isn’t just emergencies that your business should be prepared for as there are ways to prevent accidents from happening and safety signs posted near potential hazards are a basic way of informing people whether they are visitors or work force members of potential hazards they are also required to point out any fire exits too.

As well as having the necessary health and safety equipment and trained staff it is important to make sure your business has the Health and Safety Law poster clearly displayed in the workplace. The law has passed that states employers have a legal duty to display the poster which states the entire employer and employees responsibilities with regards to health and safety are. This item is important as recent changes to the law displayed on the poster have come into effect since the 6th of April in 2009, it’s equally as important to have an up to date poster as it is to display one at all. Make sure your business is observing health and safety regulations and that all employees conduct themselves in a safe, professional manner. Not only will your business operate in a safe manner but also it will be operating in a legally compliant way that is good for your business and your employees
